Some of our most common questions and their answers can be found below
sHOWCASE NATIONALS: hairspray   →
  • When are rehearsals and how often are they scheduled?
Rehearsal calenders are given out after successful auditions. Rehearsals are generally held on Sunday afternoon/nights with the occasional Monday night or Friday night.
  • Where are the rehearsals held?
All rehearsals (except stage/dress rehearsals) are held at MSJ Studio - Unit 1, 16 Brolo Court, O'Connor
  • What theatre/s are the performances held in?
Each performance is different though our most common venues are Nexus Theatre, Mandurah Performing Arts Centre, Koorliny Arts Centre, Regal Theatre and Fremantle Town Hall.
  • I need to cancel my registration and drop out of a show, can I have a refund?
No refunds are available once rehearsals have commenced. MSJ reserves the right to alter any of the arrangements for rehearsals/shows either before or during rehearsal period as required. If refunded before rehearsals commence you will lose $55 of your registration fee for admin costs.
  • How am I expected to participate as a parent?
Volunteers are very important part of an MSJ show and being part of a team is how we can produce great productions! Volunteers are depended upon to accomplish much of the production workload. Both you and your child have roles in a production. For example, a typical MSJ show has many hours of volunteer time divided among the families of all cast members. There are three areas each family can choose to participate in and several more areas to volunteer your talents and time.

Areas of Participation: Each family is required to participate in the following:

Rehearsal Supervision – Attend at least 2 rehearsals as a supervisor to monitor cast member behavior, keep noise down, and make sure everyone is picked-up safely after rehearsal ends. (Written guidelines are provided; you will work as part of a team)

Bump In & Bump Out - Work with others to load and unload the set pieces, using rental trucks, into (Bump In) and out of (Bump Out) the theatre. Plan on a 4-hour minimum or buy-out of this responsibility with $50.

Costuming - Most costumes are supplied by MSJ however some costume pieces may need to be sourced yourself.

Further Areas of Participation: On Registration you will be required to put your name down for the areas your family would most like to help in:

Prior to Bump In – Whilst the rehearsal phase is underway

Set Construction – Build and paint set pieces. No experience required!
Costumes – Assist costume designers with taking performer’s measurements, record keeping, and accessory construction. If you can sew - hand sewing or costume making is very helpful!
Props – Create/gather required props from director’s list
Planning Cast Party – Choose date & location; collect money

After Bump In – During Tech week and/or show run

Lobby Display – Create welcoming display in lobby using rehearsal photos, etc.
Photography Liaison – Coordinate sitting times for optional cast member’s portraits. Attend photography sessions and be available as needed
Backstage Supervision – Assist Coordinator with cast member preparations, behavior, noise control and meeting cues at the proper time
Stage Crew – Work backstage to assist cast members and move set pieces and scenery
Spotlights – Operate spotlights from the catwalk during tech rehearsals and performances
Make-Up/Hair – Assist cast members backstage prior to the show and/or during the performance
Props – From the wings, manage the prop table by assisting cast members in dealing with their props
Conduct Cast Party – Coordinate the event with the show coordinators and have fun!
Microphones – Assist the sound operator and performers backstage

  • How much money should I expect this experience to cost me?
Under 21 Years: Apart from your registration (rehearsal) fee of $330 including GST, you will be required to have your own makeup and hair products (occasionally hair pieces), stockings, socks and required shoes (usually character shoes and possibly other styles). Optional extras are DVD's of the performance (Broadway only as we are unable to film full musicals) and Cast Tshirts (generally around $30).
21 plus Years: Dependent on audition. More experienced performers may be exempt from any registration charges, although may be required to supply some costumes and will need own shoes, stockings etc.
  • What should I wear for the audition?
Please dress nicely and be groomed and presentable. Please also wear something that you can move in. Its always a good idea to bring jazz shoes and if you have them character shoes to any audition.
